Tremors- Hougang No. 9
Q1.What are tremors?
Q2. What causes it?
- Tremors are abrupt motion of the Earth's surface. They are caused by the sudden release in rocks of strain accumulated over time as a result of plate tectonics. As two plates move past each other they can become jammed. When sufficient strain has accumulated, the rock breaks, releasing a series of seismic waves as the plates spring free. Tectonic earthquakes will occur anywhere within the earth where there is sufficient stored elastic strain energy to drive fracture propagation along a fault plane. In the case of transform or convergent type plate boundaries, which form the largest fault surfaces on earth, they will move past each other smoothly and aseismically only if there are no irregularities or asperities along the boundary that increase the frictional resistance. Most boundaries do have such asperities and this leads to a form of stick-slip behavior. Once the boundary has locked, continued relative motion between the plates leads to increasing stress and therefore, stored strain energy in the volume around the fault surface. This continues until the stress has risen sufficiently to break through the asperity, suddenly allowing sliding over the locked portion of the fault, releasing the stored energy. This energy is released as a combination of radiated elastic strain seismic waves, frictional heating of the fault surface, and cracking of the rock, thus causing an earthquake.
- Q3. Will it affect Singapore?
- Tremors do not occur in Singapore as we are not at the epicenter. When an earthquake occurs in Indonesia, we can feel a slight tremor here in Singapore, but it does not cause any destruction or loss of lives.
- Q4. What it its effect?
- The force of earthquakes (magnitude) is measured on the Richter scale, and their effect (intensity) on the Mercalli scale. The point at which an earthquake originates is the focus or hypocentre; the point on the Earth's surface directly above this is the epicenter. When tremors occur at the ocean floor, it will cause a Tsunami.Earthquakes may result in disease, lack of basic necessities, loss of life, higher insurance premiums, general property damage, road and bridge damage, and collapse of buildings or destabilization of the base of buildings which may lead to collapse in future earthquakes. Earthquakes can also lead to volcanic eruptions, which cause further damages such as substantial crop damage. Tremors also create landslides!

Avalanche
- what is an avalanche?
- It is ethier snow, sand, huge rocks or alot of water coming down from a tall mountain at a high speed.
- what causes it?
- Weather might be the biggest factor that can cause an avalanche. It plays a huge role in the development of snow on the ground. One must consider the weather days before the scheduled trip so as to know if it is safe to continue or not. Moreover, rapid change in weather can have bad effects on snow for snowpacks do not adapt easily to rapid changes.
- The snowpack is not what you think it may seem on the surface. It may appear as a thin cover, but if you look at the cross-section of it, you may see several layers of snow that had developed through time. Snow builds up over the season, and during winter, a thicker layer is added to the previous one. Also, bonds between layers may be strong or weak. Avalanches occur if the bond is weak. Even if you have a strong bond in the upper layers of the snowpack, an avalanche may happen if the layers beneath it are weak.
- Can singapore be affected?
- No it can not be affected as there is no snow in singapore.Nor are there big rocks in singapore.

Questions:
1) What is it?
2) What causes it?
3) Can Singapore be affected?
4) What will be the effect of us?
1) An earthquake is what happens when two blocks of the earth suddenly slie past one another.
2) The earth's outer layer or crust is broken into pieces called tectonic plates which are constantly moving towards, away from or past each other. Because continents are part of these plates, they also move. An earthquake occurs when the rocks break and move as a result of stresses caused by plate movements.
3) Singapore, March 6 ( Reuters)- Serveral buildings in Singapore financial district were evacuted on Tuesday after tremors from an earthquake in neighboururing Indonesia were felt in the city-state, making tall buildings sway. Singapore can also be affected by neighbouring Indonasia.
4) Most earthquakes-related to deaths are cause by the collapse of structures and the construction practices play a tremendows role in the death toll of an earthquke. In southern Italy in 1909 more then 100,000 people perished in an earthquke that struck region.

"Drought" by The Responsible House
What is Drought?
What's a drought? Most of us think of it as “no rainfall", but it's not that simple. Drought is when you have less rainfall than you expected over an extended period of time, usually several months or longer. Drought is a normal part of climate, and it can occur almost anywhere on earth. For example, Arizona and Maine have very different climates, but drought occurs in both states. Drought's features and effects vary from place to place because of different geographical features and cultures, which affect how people use water.
A shortage of rainfall can result in major impacts on agriculture, city water supplies, tourism and recreation, energy (power) production, river navigation, and the environment.
If you are a farmer, drought means that you do not have enough water in the soil for crops to grow normally or for pastures to produce enough grass for livestock. For farmers who rely on irrigation to produce their crops, drought may be a shortage of water in reservoirs, streams, or groundwater, and irrigation may be restricted. If you live in a city, drought may result in a shortage of water for watering grass, trees, and other plants. Often during drought, people in cities are asked to conserve water used inside the home and outside. Has your town or city experienced drought recently and have residents been asked to conserve water?
What Causes Drought?
Drought has many causes. It could be a lack of rainfall; it could be a lack of snowfall from mountains far away; or it could be caused when water supplies aren't sufficient to meet everybody's needs.
To understand why we don't always get the rainfall or snowfall we need or expect, we first need to understand weather and climate. Winds cause weather patterns to move around the globe, including the clouds that bring rain. Over the years, these patterns become routine, creating what we know as our climate. But sometimes these patterns change, and we get less (or more) rainfall than we are expecting.
Can We Predict When Drought Will Occur?
Predicting drought depends on our ability to forecast precipitation and temperature. Scientists don't know how to predict drought a month or more in advance for most parts of the world.
How Droughts Affect Us
When people hear the words natural disasters, they usually think of hurricanes, earthquakes, fires, floods, tornadoes - events that are sudden and frightening, that can cause a great deal of devastation, and that make a lasting impression on us. Drought usually isn't the first disaster that comes to mind! That's because drought, unlike a tornado or an earthquake, for example, usually doesn't have a sudden beginning or end. We can see a tornado and feel an earthquake, but we can't see drought. It happens when we don't get as much water as we expect or need over a significant period of time, and it happens so slowly that we only see its effects.
When drought occurs, it can have many far-reaching impacts. That's because water is an important part of so many of our activities. We need water for everything from human, wildlife, and plant health; to washing dishes, river rafting, and fishing; to growing food, cooling engines, and producing electricity. When we don't have enough water for these activities, there will most often be a negative impact.

TSUNAMI *WHAT CAUSES IT? * Tsunamis, also called seismic sea waves or, incorrectly, tidal waves, generally are caused by earthquakes, less commonly by submarine landslides, infrequently by submarine volcanic eruptions and very rarely by a large meteorite impact in the ocean or by other underwater explosions and testing with nuclear weapons at sea. Submarine volcanic eruptions have the potential to produce truly awesome,in this case terrifying and life-threatening waves. WHAT IS ITS "M.O."? in the open ocean, the tsunami has a amplitude of a few feet but the wave energy extend from the surface to the deepest waters. The tsunami is compressed into a much into a much shorter distance creating destructive, live-threatening waves. Will singapore be affected?earthquakes in our region are more prone to occur along the major fault-lines off the outer coasts of Sumatra,Java and the Philipines.Due to its geographic position,Singarpore is sheltered by the Indonesian Archipelago in the west and south and the Philipines in the east therefore it is very unlikely for Singapore to be directly be affected by a tsunami. comic jokers(research by cheang yi , zilin and reinvs) written by reinvs
