Elizabeth Choy's Education
Elizabeth and her siblings were sent back to Kudat where her paternal grandfather ran the village school which is teached in chinese there.Her higher level of education was taken at St. Monica School at Sandakan.As the teachers there cannot pronounce the chinese names,she was given the name Elizabeth.In 1925 she and her aunt became the first girls to sign up in North Borneo's Girl Guides Company.During 1927,she teached the lower standards even though she is still studying.In 1929 she came over to Singapore to further pursue her studies at the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus.he results were impressive and she received the Prize of Honour during her first year of school at December 30,1930.He mother then died in 1931,the onset of the Great Depression placed upon her burden of raising her other six siblings.She forwent a college,even a scholarship she may be able to get, to start work so that she could finance the education of her younger siblings.
